Microsoft Research

Welcome to Microsoft Research! This Web Space is designed to inform you about our group. If you are looking for something (or someone) in particular, please select the Search button at the top or bottom of this page for quick access to information contained in this space. To learn more about MSR, check out the Microsoft Research Introduction page.

To help structure this space we have divided our research areas into three primary "Research Themes" and listed the various research groups according to theme. In addition to individual group pages, each theme has an overview page with thumbnail descriptions of each group's research.

Advanced Interactivity and Intelligence.  The AI&I groups are pursuing technologies and interaction paradigms to make it much easier to use computers. We are investigating new modalities of interaction, interfaces which can learn and adapt to specific users, and social user interfaces.

          Decision Theory Graphics

          Natural Language Processing Speech Technology

          User Interfaces Vision Technology

Programming Tools and Methodologies. The PT&M groups are developing tools and methodologies to assist the programmer both in being more productive and in producing higher quality code. Tools are being developed based on more powerful representations and analysis of source, novel binary rewriting techniques, and a new software development environment.

          Advanced Development Tools Intentional Programming

          Program Analysis

Systems and Architecture. The S&A groups are devoted to extending the capabilities of systems based on personal computers. This includes work on high performance databases, building scaleable systems based on clusters of machines, and operating systems capable of delivering guaranteed quality-of-service for multimedia and other time sensitive applications.
